Self-Preservation

She had changed.

He knew it, but it wouldn't be very nice of him to just call her on it out-of-turn. They existed in quarters too close to go on for very long without mentioning it, however.

One day, she announced her plans for the night as "burning my bra".

He didn't believe she could do it. Until he found himself emptying a fire extinguisher into a smoking sink.

She was eerily calm about the entire incident, which frightened him all the more. When he asked her about it, she announced that she was tired of her confines.

This, he believed, was no way to show it.

"Read this," She said, handing him a biography of Frances Farmer, "It says everything."

But in that tale of lobotomies and repression, Matt could not find Amy's story. She had been an indulged child, as far as he knew, and pushed herself out of the nest and into the world at a bizarrely young age.

Matt wondered to himself if he simply didn't understand women at all.

Still, he couldn't fight Amy on something she seemed driven by. Arriving for the next show with a much lighter duffel, Matt cornered his brother and began pouring out his frustrations, concerns and anxieties. Jeff listened in silence, then announced.

"She's just going through a phase. Ride it out, the two of you will be fine."

Matt didn't dare wonder out loud if Jeff was simply applying his own hopes to Amy's action. She hadn't gone through a true adolescence, and seemed to be exploring herself in the only available way to her.

He muffled his horror when she found him, a wide smile plastered across her face.

"What is it?" Dread inched itself up his neck.

"I've quit," She smiled, "Vince is going to release me. And I couldn't be happier!"
