What Is, What Shouldn't Be
"This shouldn't have happened."
He couldn't say that he could see why. Hell, it wasn't like they hadn't played couple's do-se-do before; hell, Jackie was probably somewhere with Kelso right now. He didn't respond to her, preferring to blow another smoke ring toward the ceiling.
"You shouldn't have wrote it."
She winced, trying to shrink away from his almost friendly accusation. They had the same sort of rough, who-gives-a-shit exterior, but, coming down from a beer-soaked buzz, she felt naked.
Angrily stuffing herself back into her cut-offs, she grunted, standing. "It was private, you turd. You weren't supposed to see it."
"You left it wide-open in your room. Jackie's snoops around, if you didn't know that already."
"You don't have to be an asshole." Donna told the wall.
"Yeah. I sort of do."
"Why?"
"Because...why the hell would you want to cheat on Eric with me?"
"Want to know why?" Donna snapped, pulling her top on. "Because it was a fantasy, Hyde. A simple, little fantasy. The kind a girl like Jackie writes down in her diary. Girls like me have the same kind of fantasies, and no one guesses because of;" She gestured to herself, unable to explain more.
"So why are you pissed?"
"Because it was a fantasy! I didn't have to act it out. I didn't want to act it out!"
"I didn't do any forcing."
"No." She said flatly. "But we both know this was a mistake."
"Why?"
"Because I love Eric." She watched him stare blankly onward. "And you know something? Despite all of the shit she pulls on you, I know you love Jackie."
The words were a fierce damnation to Hyde, but, so satiated by booze and pot and sex, he could not muster the will to feel much more than a mild guilt. Reality would come later, and later he would have to hide the fear it would bring.
"This doesn't change anything." She finished, closing doors emotional and physical, stomping out into the frigid snow.
Unable to admit to himself how right she was, he screwed his eyes tightly shut. His emotions were his property, and he did not have to share them.
