"The diamond."

He looks up from his paper. "Excuse me?"

"My diamond ring! The fucking thing's gone!" She knelt on the floor, ransacking a drawer. "Damnit!"

"Calm down, Roxie. I'm sure it's..."

"SHUT UP!" She pinned Billy to the wall with her voice. He shrugged, easily mannered, giving up and fading against the red velvet walls. He knew how she was, when she drank.

"If you want more diamonds, we can get you new diamonds."

She glared at him again; why had she ever agreed to let him guide her through the world of show biz ethics? Why was he even here, instead of with Velma, where he belonged.

"You wouldn't get why they mean anything to me." Her eyes hardened, and she suddenly shoved the drawer back into place. "It don't matter."

"You seemed very upset Rox-"

"It don't matter." She stubbed out her cigarette on a brass tray, standing up and tossing a stole over her shoulder. "You get us reservations?"

"Of course."

She yanked on his arm and they strolled out of the hotel.

And at her toes the unseen, missing ring rolled in a semicircle, the inscription circling like a burning cartwheel at her foot.
